ALERT! Swiss Francs Threaten Indonesian Rainforests

Oil palm has devastated Indonesia's rainforests and life including orangutans and local peopleTAKE ACTION!

Major Swiss banks Credit Suisse and UBS are to further fund Golden Agri-Resources [search] (GAR), the world's largest listed palm oil company, which currently produces 10 percent of Indonesia's palm oil. A further 1.3 million hectares of land are to be developed for palm oil plantations [search] with Swiss finance on the island of Indonesia Kalimantan (Borneo) and in Papua on the Western half of the island of New Guinea. Let these banks and the Swiss government know that their financing of rainforest destruction and climate change is completely unacceptable and will be protested until it ends.

corporations like this are only interested in profit. they are amoral and cannot be reasoned with. We all know that once the rainforests are gone there is no getting them back, yet we are in thrall to these giant financial institutions, who effectively control governments by offering their financial support. We will protest and march against them, we will lobby governments against them, but their power is in their wealth, and if there is profit in destroying our planet then thats the goal they will pursue. Negative media coverage may help, it may be our only weapon.

stop destroying our home for your greed

IT'S NOT ABOUT US ANYMORE! WE ALREADY HAVE EVERYTHING! WHY THIS GREED! LEAVE THEM BE!!!!! DISCGRACE TO HUMAN RACE!

There are no jobs on a dead planet!

There is much less forest left in Thailand than in Indonesia, but the palmoil monocultures are growing here too. I have blogged about your action request in German language at http://thaihaus.info/2009/07/die-grosen-schweizer-banken-finanzieren-die-zerstorung-des-indonesischen-regenwaldes/

I agree with the above. People like the CEO and Chairman of those giant companies only sees profit as the goal and nothing else. They do not realise that they too need those forests and need a clean air to survive. Not to mention the countless of flora and fauna and the people who rely on the forest, where are they going to live? where are they going to make a living? It not like the giant companies will provide them a lifetime of food and shelter. They all should be dealt with severely. I am sure corruption is the main reason things get approved. I urge the world, the nature lovers and all that is concern for their own well being to fight for nature.

Please stop this !

The perpetuation of the myth of indefinite progress is too readily invoked to excuse every possible abuse and every act of violence against man and nature.
So often has this been the case that progress has become a word that sets up humanity against nature.
In the end violence against nature is violence against us all.

Please leave the land alone.

The rainforests are so important . They are the lungs of the earth.

We need to preserve all the nature we have left, so practical reasons and for the soul x

WHY ARE THEY DOING IT???
1. CONSPIRACY BUT WHAT FOR?
2. DESTROYING SO THAT THEY MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO SELL OR BUILDING POWER OR ???? I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THEY GOING TO DESTROY OUR HOMELAND WHERE WE STAY OR IS IT ANOTHER PLANET WE CAN LIVE ON???

about time we put a stop to the short term greed of these evil people.bio fuel is not a solution to the problem of oil shortages anyway

The Swiss are in great financial shape compared to many other countries. This is just unecessary and selfish.

We must care for the rainforest!Otherwise we will destroy everything, including ourselves.
Save our children!

The Europeans exploited Africa and made profits now they are trying to exploit Asia of it resources.

What, palm oil might not be an alternative fuel? Please stop thinking in circles and look for solutions.

I am disgusted that Palm Oil is taking over the forests and land, killing all the wild animal especially the Orangutans, will the human race be next by the spreading of these Palm Oil plants over vast areas

To continue to destroy the earth for money is no longer acceptable. These forests keep all of us alive. It must stop

In the run up to the Copenhagen climate change conference, it is vital the following information be disseminated to the public as well as to our political leaders.

A widely cited 2006 report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, Livestock's Long Shadow, estimates that 18 percent of annual worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are attributable to livestock….however recent analysis by Goodland and Anhang co-authors of "Livestock and Climate Change" in the latest issue of World Watch magazine found that livestock and their byproducts actually account for at least 32.6 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year, or 51 percent of annual worldwide GHG emissions!

http://www.worldwatch.org/files/pdf/Livestock%20and%20Climate%20Change.pdf

The main sources of GHGs from animal agriculture are: (1) Deforestation of the rainforests to grow feed for livestock. (2) Methane from manure waste. – Methane is 72 times more potent as a global warming gas than CO2 (3) Refrigeration and transport of meat around the world. (4) Raising, processing and slaughtering of the animal.

Meat production also uses a massive amount of water and other resources which would be better used to feed the world’s hungry and provide water to those in need.

Based on their research, Goodland and Anhang conclude that replacing livestock products with soy-based and other alternatives would be the best strategy for reversing climate change. They say "This approach would have far more rapid effects on GHG emissions and their atmospheric concentrations-and thus on the rate the climate is warming-than actions to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy."
